Knights of the Frozen Throne card review: Voodoo Hexxer

Hearthstone’s Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion card reveal season has started! We can expect to see multiple cards revealed on daily basis for the next couple of weeks leading up to the expansion itself.

In this post, I take an in-depth look at Voodoo Hexxer.

Voodoo Hexxer

Voodoo Hexxer is a rare Shaman class card from Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion. It is a five-mana 2/7 minion with Taunt and a special effect to Freeze any character damaged by it.

The special effect is the exact same ability that Water Elemental has:

  • Minions or Heroes that are damaged on the opponent’s turn miss their next attack
  • If a minion takes no damage – it has a Divine Shield, for example – it is not frozen
  • The enemy Hero can also be frozen

Voodoo Hexxer has a lot of potential as an anti-aggro tool. As it is a Taunt minion, it can force the opponent to attack into it, and even if it is destroyed, the minions that attacked are unable to attack again next turn. It is almost like having two Taunt minions in one!

Its low attack limits its usefulness as an offensive tool. With only two attack, Voodoo Hexxer does two things: stalls the game and freezes things. The value of a high-health Taunt minion is clear. The value of the freeze effect depends on upcoming synergies.

Voodoo Hexxer is the first playable card that synergizes with Ice Breaker, the upcoming Shaman weapon that destroys any frozen minions that it damages. It is exactly the kind of repeatable freeze effect that Ice Breaker needs in order to be good. Whether a single card is enough remains to be seen, it probably needs something more. Voodoo Hexxer, on the other hand, is a fine card even without Ice Breaker.

Voodoo Hexxer can be Discovered from Stonehill Defender: the exact math will have to wait until we have the full set, but right now it would be offered around 19% of the time for Shaman.

Because of its highly defensive nature, the archetype where Voodoo Hexxer belongs is clear: Control Shaman.

What kind of competition does Voodoo Hexxer face there?

  • Volcano
  • White Eyes
  • Elise the Trailblazer
  • Earth Elemental
  • Harrison Jones
  • Hallazeal the Ascended
  • Servant of Kalimos

There are some potential cards at five mana for Control Shaman. If it is a more Jade/Elemental-focused build, it can be difficult to find a spot for Voodoo Hexxer. Something more in N’Zoth or Crusher style will have an easier time fitting in a card that helps them set up their key turns. If freeze synergies turn out to be an even bigger deal in Shaman, Voodoo Hexxer can also find a place in any deck that wants to focus on them.
