Hearthstone Championship Tour 2017 Summer Championship was played on 13th to 15th October 2017 at the new Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles. 16 players from around the world had qualified for and participated in the tournament that consisted of a double-elimination group stage followed by single-elimination top-8 playoffs.
In this post, I take a look at the decks and results of the tournament, including class distribution, archetypes, and archetype performance.
Results
The event was played in a best-of-five Conquest format with one ban. It started with a double-elimination group stage followed by single-elimination playoffs.
The games can be found on Blizzard’s Twitch channel:
Day 1, groups round 1 and winners: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/181906777
Day 2, groups losers and deciders: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/182175083
Day 3, top-8: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/182449133
The players were divided into four groups with one player from each region in each group.
Group A consisted of Tom60229 (Taiwan), OldBoy (Ukraine), Nalguidan (Argentina), and Trunks (China). Tom60229 won the group and OldBoy advanced as the runner-up.
Group B consisted of JasonZhou (China), Purple (Canada), Uya (Japan), and Amyks (Poland). JasonZhou won the group, and Purple advanced as the runner-up.
Group C consisted of Surrender (South Korea), Orange (Sweden), OmegaZero (China), and YAYtears (USA). Surrender won the group, and Orange advanced as the runner-up.
Group D consisted of Pavel (Russia), Empanizado (Mexico), Cocosasa (South Korea), and BaiZe (China). Pavel won the group, and Empanizado advanced as the runner-up.
Here is the playoff bracket and results:
In the end, Surrender managed to defeat Orange in a thriller of a final with a score of 3-2 and took home the title!

The players who qualified to the World Championship in January 2018 are Surrender, Orange, Purple, and JasonZhou. They will be joined by the players who qualified in Spring and Winter seasons (Ant, DocPwn, Frozen, Hoej, Kolento, Neirea, SamuelTsao, and ShtanUdachi) as well as by the top Last Call point earners from each region (at the end of October 2017 – Muzzy, Sintolol, and Tom60229 have too much of a lead for anyone to catch up, and China’s results have not been published in the West).
Class distribution
The decklists were published before the tournament in Blizzard’s own preview article: https://playhearthstone.com/en-us/blog/21101731/here-are-your-hct-summer-championship-deck-lists-10-5-17
Classes from the most popular to the least popular:
- Priest: 16
- Druid: 15
- Rogue: 12
- Shaman: 6
- Warlock: 5
- Paladin: 4
- Warrior: 3
- Mage: 2
- Hunter: 1
All classes were represented at the highest level of play. Whether all classes should have been present is another question though, as the performance of Hunter, in particular, was abysmal.
The three most popular classes should come as no surprise to anyone who has played Hearthstone in the post-nerf meta: Priest, Druid, and Rogue dominate both ladder and tournament play. The rest are mostly fillers.
Archetype distribution by class and archetype performance
How did the big three do? Tempo Rogue was the deadliest of the three, achieving a 21-16 (57%) record in non-mirror matches. Kazakus Priest followed nearby at 55% (27-22). Jade Druid was a huge ban target, but when it was not banned, it was targeted, and its 41% (9-13) win rate is nothing to brag about.
Perhaps it is time to say that the nerfs were at least enough to make Jade Druid targetable. Of course, it was still the most banned class, so over a wide pool of archetypes – such as on ladder – the deck still remains a huge threat. In tournaments,it is slightly less dominant now.
The fourth-most popular class, Shaman, and its only archetype, Evolve Shaman, struggled. With a 42% winrate (10-14), it had a hard time making it, and many matches ended in a Shaman mirror in game five after all other decks got their wins over the poor fellow.
The fifth-most popular class, Warlock, did not do much better. For Warlock though, things were split. Handlock was disastrous in the tournament at 6-10 (38%), but Zoolock did well at 3-1 (75%). The only Zoolock that saw play was from Uya, and it was a late-game heavy variant with a lot of power in it to challenge control decks.
Paladin, once again, performed flawlessly. Murloc Paladin 6-4 (60%), Aggro Paladin 3-1 (75%), and Control Paladin 2-0 (100%). It seems as if no matter which Paladin archetype you pick, success was guaranteed.
N’Zoth Control Warrior did not have its best days, but at 4-4 (50%) it was a reasonable filler. It has occasionally been able to carry, but after the Fiery War Axe nerf the deck is still searching for itself a little. I would not dismiss it still, the archetype holds promise and has been bubbling under in several recent tournaments.
Oh yeah, there was also a Hunter in the tournament. With a 1-5 (17%) performance, it single-handedly ruined OmegaZero’s tournament. Don’t bring Hunter.
The most banned class was not the ubiquitous Kazakus Priest (9 bans), but Jade Druid (at whopping 34 bans). Surrender had decided to ban Tempo Rogue, and was responsible for most of the Tempo Rogue bans (6 bans overall). BaiZe, the only player without a Druid in her lineup, had her Zoolock banned in both of her matches (2 bans overall). Other than that, there were a couple of other bans on Evolve Shaman (2 bans) and Midrange Hunter (1 ban).
Archetype performance excluding mirror matches:
Paladin
- 2 Murloc Paladins 6-4
- 1 Aggro Paladin 3-1
- 1 Control Paladin 2-0
Warrior
- 2 N’Zoth Control Warriors 4-4
- 1 Taunt Warrior 1-2
Druid
- 14 Jade Druids 9-13
- 1 Aggro Druid 2-2
Mage
- 1 Kazakus Mage 2-4
- 1 Control Mage 3-2
Rogue
- 12 Tempo Rogues 21-16
Shaman
- 6 Evolve Shamans 10-14
Priest
- 16 Kazakus Priests 27-22
Warlock
- 3 Handlocks 6-10
- 2 Zoolocks 3-1
Hunter
- 1 Midrange Hunter 1-5
Deck spotlights
The biggest tournament, and one with open decklists at that, is not a place where you expect to see a lot of completely off-meta decks. There is a reason why the strongest decks are considered to be the strongest decks, and with no element of surprise, it can be difficult to overcome them.
That said, the popular decks were teched in many different ways in the tournament, and there were some nicely performing off-meta choices as well – their pilots did not make it that far in the tournament, but some individual decks in their lineups still brought good results.
Here is a collection of the most successful and interesting decks from the tournament. Have fun with them!
Orange’s and Pavel’s Prince Keleseth Tempo Rogue
There were a few variants of Prince Keleseth Tempo Rogue in the tournament. The main difference between builds was the choice of Cobalt Scalebane or Bittertide Hydra for the five-mana slot.
Cairne Bloodhoof, a great card against Priest especially, has become almost a staple, and Prince Valanar makes regular appearances in the four-mana slot, competing with Xaril, Poisoned Mind and Spellbreaker.
Shadowblade is beginning to enter the decklists and Cold Bloods are on their way out. The deck has definitely evolved over the past weeks and become an even stronger contender.
This list was brought by both Orange and Pavel and altogether they had a 7-2 record with it, making it the best-performing Prince Keleseth Tempo Rogue build in the tournament.

Empanizado’s Princeless Tempo Rogue
There is also another way to Tempo Rogue. You can leave out Prince Keleseth, and instead target the princely Tempo Rogue decks by running Eviscerate and Golakka Crawlers instead. Two players chose this path, Cocosasa with a more Elemental-focused approach and Empanizado with otherwise regular build.
Empanizado’s build worked out better, beating Cocosasa in the mirror and beating everything else it encountered as well and going 3-0. Unfortunately for Empanizado, Surrender banned Tempo Rogue in their match, and Empanizado’s run came to an end.
This deck is simple, pure, and solid, and targets the Prince version quite effectively. Its mid-game power with Spellbreaker, Xaril, double Bittertide Hydra and double Cobalt Scalebane is considerable, and Tar Creepers and Golakka Crawlers position it well for the mirror.

Surrender’s Jade Druid
There were a number of Jade Druid variants in the tournament. Some had double Dirty Rat and double Mind Control Tech, some had Medivh, some had Kun, some had Primordial Drake. Nalguidan even had a copy of Naturalize in his build.
Surrender was the only one who brought the Mark of the Lotus variant – turning Spreading Plague into a threat instead of a mere setback. His list worked out well for him too, he went 2-0 with it, the rest of the time it was banned.

Surrender’s Kazakus Priest
Prophet Velen has become staple in Kazakus Priest and was included in every list. Kazakus Priest has become more of a combo deck, often able to take down the opponent in a single turn with the help of the Prophet – after Anduin and Raza, Prophet Velen, Mind Blast, and Holy Smite can be combined for 28 damage from hand, and Radiant Elemental, one-mana Kazakus potion, or some zero-mana spells can turn that to more than 30 damage.
However, Prophet Velen is more than a combo card. In several games against Jade Druid, for example, Priest players opted to go for a tempo Velen simply to increase pressure on the board.
AuchenaI Soulpriest and Circle of Healing are also becoming more popular and found in most of the lists now. Many old cards are no longer taken for granted. People are occasionally cutting Gnomish Inventor, Pint-Size Potion + Shadow Word: Horror, even Greater Healing Potion (for Binding Heal) or Lyra the Sunshard (for Gadgetzan Auctioneer for more card draw).
Surrender was one of the most successful Kazakus Priest pilots, going 3-1 with his list that was more on the traditional side, although it did include the Auchenai + Circle package and a Dirty Rat as a tech card.

Uya’s Prince Keleseth Demon Zoo
Two players brought Zoo to the tournament. BaiZe had her Zoo banned in each match, but Uya’s Zoo went on to a 3-1 record, making it more successful than the Handlocks multiple people brought.
Uya’s build is an interesting one. It has both discard (Malchezaar’s Imp, Soulfire, Doomguard) and demon (Blood Imp, Bloodfury Potion, Crystalweaver) synergies, as well as some powerful end-game cards such as Cairne Bloodhoof, The Lich King, and Bloodreaver Gul’dan. Running discard effects with end-game cards sometimes hurts you when you end up discarding the big bombs, but Uya was able to pilot the deck quite successfully.

Nalguidan’s Control Mage
Only two players brought Mage to the tournament. Tom60229 had his Kazakus Mage, which, while unique, did not perform too well with a 2-4 record. Nalguidan brought an interesting variant of Control Mage that runs Arcane Giants, and performed slightly better with it at a 3-2 record.
Freezing boards and hitting face with Giants and minions summoned by Atiesh can be powerful. Surprisingly, there is no Frost Lich Jaina in the deck, it really wants to focus on its freeze and breeze win condition.

BaiZe’s / Jia Dee’s Prince Taldaram Evolve Shaman
Evolve Shaman was one of the worst-performing archetypes in the tournament, so there is no meta-breaker list to showcase. That said, BaiZe had some unconventional ideas about the deck, running Cult Masters for card draw over Mana Tide Totems, Prince Taldaram to copy various effects, and Masters of Evolution for even more Evolve effects.
Perhaps Master of Evolution over Thing from Below was taking things a bit too far, as Jia Dee played this slightly modified version (Things over Masters) of the list to #24 Legend on the ladder while the tournament was ongoing.
Deck code: AAECAaoIBJG8ApS9AuvPAp3iAg2rBuUH8AeTCfqqAvuqAqC2Aoe8AtG8Ava9Avm/ApHBAuvCAgA=
Amyks’ Control Paladin
Control Paladin has not been receiving a lot of hype lately. Condemned to the lower rungs of the archetype ladder, it is actually a viable deck in patient hands. Amyks has that gentle touch and piloted this build to a 2-0 record. Unfortunately, the rest of his full-control lineup could not perform to the same level.
